Remnants of World War II
Many fortifications from World War II are located in the area.
Fulunäs 5 km east of Sälens Vandrarhem lies a large fortification, where the river is a natural border between Sweden and Norway. Fortifications in the form of giant stones were placed in three tight rows on a 2 ½ km radius around the bridge, with over 180 turrets and excavated positions, this fortification was supposed to defend Sweden from the enemy. The bridge was also mined to be blown up if the enemy came too close.
Remnants of World War II are also found in idyllic areas of Sweden, during World War II this area was militarized due to the possible invasion of Nazi Germany from Norway. Today there are possibly 100 remains of bunkers, excavations and trenches above and around Fulunäs, a semicircle or anti-tank stones are clearly visible. This hike takes you past some of these remains. The trail starts from the Solider statue at the junction of road 311 and W1054 to Trysil, walk north about 800 meters along the road and turn right up the gravel road, after another 200 meters turn right again, this trail passes anti-tank barriers and a number of bunkers, keep your eyes open mother nature has camouflaged them well over the last 80 years, the trail gets narrower and less good, eventually reaching the anti-tank barrier, either return the same way or follow the stream 100 meters down to the road and down to the river.
